Shinshin-tōitsu-dō literally means way of mind and body unification. It intends to use our mind and bodies to realize our nature as humans. The efficient use of our minds and bodies will realize such goal. Moreover, our fundamental tools should be in coordination with each other so that we could express ourselves freely and naturally. Three elements should be taken into consideration in the unification of our mind and bodies. Primarily, it includes training to reveal the nature of positivity. It also involves the reformation of the subconscious. Lastly, an essential element in Japanese yoga consists in maintaining and regulating a balanced condition of the different organ systems, especially the nervous system.

Japanese yoga was founded in the early 1900s by Nakamura Tempu, a Japanese martial artist. He fused his learnings of traditional Indian yoga which he acquired when he stayed in India, with his knowledge of medicine from Columbia University. He focused specifically on the variation of Raja Yoga and Karma Yoga which he learned from his Indian teacher Kaliapa.

From these pieces of information, he was able to identify universal principles that could intensify the unity of the mind and the body. He also includes several Japanese principles with the yoga styles and called it shinshin-tōitsu-dō. He taught his style of Yoga to Koichi Tohei, a practitioner of the martial art Aikido.

Japanese yoga involves four principles which serve as the cornerstone in unifying the body and the mind. The first principle is to use the mind positively. This involves examining the self and examining one’s attitude towards others. It also includes analyzing suggestions which are received from the environment, discovering the present, and experiencing the universal mind.

The second principle is to use the mind with full concentration. This involves concentrating on matters which are familiar, uninteresting, those of no value, and those that need to be accomplished quickly. The third principle is to use the body naturally. Finally, the fourth principle involves training the body gradually yet continuously.

The consistent practice of Japanese yoga could bring about positive changes in one’s self. Primarily, such yoga releases stress from the mind and emotions. Constant practice of the yoga helps release endorphins which help reduce tension. Moreover, Japanese yoga improves one’s mental clarity. It is an efficient way of relaxing the mind.

Another advantage of Japanese yoga includes self-healing. This involves the practice of isolation movements in particular parts of the body. This helps relax the muscles, enhancing its flexibility and relieving the tension in the shoulders. It also helps increase circulation.

 

Japanese yoga is more than just a simple meditation. It involves the careful unification of the body and the mind to bring about positive changes in one’s self. It is a way of life, and one could only achieve mental clarity by being guided by the different principles of such yoga.
